SO... what are you gonna do? The 3rd round of Umbro Industries is now open for submissions until 7th April, so get your ideas submitted online.. Click the image and away you go!
We want to give you a heads up about a new XXXY track available for download with FACT magazine... its only up for a week so act fast! Click above.
The 4th release from Dj Mischief's My First Moth imprint and the 3rd in a recent series of 7"s. This one is a real treat. Stepping away from previous remix work this 7" combines a pretty raucos breaks and flute driven A side and a more relaxed and head nodding instrumental B side "1986". Quite possibly their best release to date, GET ON IT NOW!
To get you in the mood, here is yesterday's Groovement podcast, with Brainfeeder's DAEDELUS and Hoya Hoya's JONNY DUB.
We will be in the Groovement studio in 2 weeks time with the Mount Kimbie boys so listen in for that!
Enjoy! Borland - Podcast 4 - The Laboratory
Its now less than 2 weeks until Mount Kimbie arrive in Manchester for our show at Islington Mill and to get yourself in the mood you should check out this live set they played at The Deaf Institute earlier this year at the Red Bull Academy session.
Check the online home of the awesome Ctrl+Alt+Shift magazine. We are happy to announce that we will be running a special Bank Holiday (Friday 30th April) event at Contact Theatre in conjuction with the people at the mag and some of our extended Manchester fam. Keep an eye out for more info coming soon.
Check the brand new TNC video with their take on the Bridge/Terry affair. Hilarious!
The Mind on Fire Band were featured in the 1st issue of new Manchester magazine TBA, which if youre lucky enough you will find in a few select venues in town, including Eastern Bloc.
For everyone else you can check the digital version below!
The piece was written by Dave Firth, and you can check his blog for other bits, musings and articles here:
All you need to do is email us at mofsounds@gmail.com with 'SFTOC comp' in the subject line and answer this simple question:
In what year was Salford granted City status?
In other news, we have more competitions on the way with free tickets for Chris Cunningham, and the Same Teens house party up for grabs so watch this space!
The winners of the Four Tet ticket competition will be announced at the end of the month.
Good luck!
To win the tickets all you have to do is email us again at mofsounds@gmail.com and answer the following question...
What is the name of the Same Teens magazine, (which they won funding for when we both won Umbro Industries together)?
We're gonna be spinning some wax down at the party too, so come down and get involved!
To win the tickets, just answer the following question. As usual, email mofsounds@gmail.com with 'Chris Cunningham comp' in the subject line.
In which of Chris Cunningham's critically acclaimed videos do we see a dog dressed up in a doctor's coat?
If you don't know, you better get watching some of his stuff!
Good luck!
Mind On Fire's Loga recently caught up with Manchester's premier Jazz Trumpeter Matthew Halsall to talk Jazz, music and the future. He was kind enough to do us a 45 minute Jazz and Funk mix too. To download that click the icon above and to see the interview in full click the picture of the man himself or alternately HERE. Don't forget to check out his night Step Up at the legendary Band On The Wall too.
Click the image below to check the facebook group for regular updates and mark the date in your diary.
This year we will be teaming up with WOTGODFORGOT to present a day of live acts in the Salvation Army, and will also be hosting one of the after parties, a residents mashup in conjunction with some of Manchester's finest club nights. Hold tight for more info!
| Riot Jazz Cheese Board
|
First are the fantastic Riot Jazz Brass Band who are like a massive gang, if gangs replaced their weapons with horn instruments (tenuous I know) If your looking for a bit of get up and go party music then this is the one for you, check the heavy duty, horn laden mega mix above on their Cheese Board selection.
| Ceased
|
Next up is Yes Blythe who makes epic, melodic pieces that almost sound like the soundtrack to a film that hasn't been made yet (this in fact will be the soundtrack to my next late night bike ride) Close your eyes, listen to the great Ceased above and let the sound wash over you.
Brought to you by Now Wave, who have gone to the next level with their bookings this year (they are teaming up with wotgodforgot to bring Gil Scott Heron over here a few days later on the 25th April!) and they have been kind enough to give Mind on Fire 2 tickets for 'Chris Cunningham and Friends' a competition prize, so watch this space, the competition question will be released soon!
February 18th sees MOF DJs Loga, Zoir and DJ Scalp repping it with Jackie O Massive. Free entry every time, come down!
More info soon but in the meantime, check out the facebook group here and click the image below to register on the website.
You can check these guys selecting on Fridays at Red Rum and will be residents at the returning Reggae Thursdays session at Saki.
NEIGHBOURHOOD will be returning for a one off special at Islington Mill in April, and hold tight for some more cheeky bar sessions and festival shows in the coming months.
Go Lebanon will be returning for their first show since the Mind on Fire website launch a year ago supporting Tune Yards next month.
Also, we will be running a competition to win 2 free tickets to see Faust in the coming months, so keep checking back. If you saw their Futuresonic show in 2008 youll know that this show will be awesome!
All you have to do is email mofsounds@gmail.com with 'fourtet comp' in the subject line and answer the following question.
Q1. What is the name of the band that Kieran Hebden played in before Four Tet?
Good luck!
EDIT : 8/3/10

Blood Spilling (Live at Norvun Sunday 15/11/09)
Welcome one, welcome all, to www.mindonfire.co.uk, the home of forward thinking Manchester music.
We are always looking for music for the website so send tracks through to mofsounds@gmail.com. Any and all genres are welcome, we want to give a good picture of the wide variety of music happening in the city right now.
Feel free to browse around at your leisure and listen to Mancunian music until your heart is content. Everywhere you see the orange speaker icon you can click to add that song to a playlist and everywhere there is a green download icon, well you know the rest surely. You will be able to listen to songs without being a member but to access free MP3 downloads and Mixes and Podcasts you will first have to register here.
There are currently 41 artists featured on the site with more in the pipeline so to help you digest all of this music we will be featuring one act every couple weeks.
Mind on Fire favourites Borland will be playing their first full live band show, and TCIO resident band From The Kites of San Quentin will be doing their thing aswell. You can listen to both on the new MOF5 birthday compilation here.
Also playing is 7 Black Tentacles from Sheffield, who sound amazing and we're really excited to see the 12 piece live in Manchester. Click the image below for more info, links and tuneage, and we'll see you down there :)
The end of November has seen the MOF Band hitting the studio to begin work recording an E.Ps worth of material. We are hoping to have something ready by early summer 2010 but keep an eye on the website for any sneak previews of the tracks and live videos which should hopefully be coming very soon.
To clear up any confusion that may have been caused the MOF band is comprised of 8 people who had previously played with bands such as Go Lebanon, Making Faces, M16 Live and Fighting as well as producing music under the guises of czuk, Zoir and collaborating together in various side projects. We have been performing together with the current line up for the past 6 months but are now in hibernation until 2010 writing and recording material so watch this space.
A quick heads up about Drum Clinic on Friday, in new venue Sub 61, which we're all pretty excited about checking out. A top lineup led by Jazzsteppa,, with support from Herbal Sessions, Ken Evil, and Jim Open Plan, and live art from the 158 crew.
Click the link above for more info, and see you down there!
Check out their blog below, with free mp3s and mixes to download, and look out for new issues of XOX throughout 2010.
You may have noticed that the current featured artist on the website is psychedelic drone combo Gnod. If you like what you hear you have a chance to check them out this Sunday at Islington Mill alongside Teeth of the Sea, Thought Forms, The Sandells & Factory Star from 7pm.
In just over two weeks time some of our good friends are putting on what can only be described as a humdinger of a show at Academy 2 featuring Battles, Flying Lotus and Nice Nice. Tickets are going like the proverbial temperate baked desert products so click the image above or HERE to get your hands on some before its too late.
As the final part of our 5th birthday celebrations we are releasing a 17 track compilation, available for digital download here at www.mindonfire.co.uk. It will soon be available to download in zip format but for now members of the site can listen to or download each track indivdually right here.

DRUM MUSIC featuring MIND ON FIRE COLLECTIVE
FRIDAY 17th JULY
SAKI BAR, Wilmslow Rd/Moss Lane
10pm
2 bits of really bad news now....
PREFUSE 73 has cancelled most of the UK dates in his upcoming European tour, citing "financial reasons"... We're really gutted as we think we'd put together a great lineup, but hopefully we'll re-arrange at some point. All tickets can be refunded at point of sale.
It is with massive disappointment that we announce the cancellation of LAST MAN STANDING this weekend. For reasons totally beyond our control, issues with the venue have meant that the party cannot take place. We searched for last minute alternatives to no avail, and are still keen to get a little something sorted as a thank you to everyone who bought tickets… Theres plenty on this weekend – including Drum Roots at Deaf Institute - and a couple of summer solstice parties so keep your ears to the ground. We’re totally devastated, and will do everything we can to get another one sorted in the near future…Tickets will be refunded from the point of purchase… shops are doing refunds, ticketline will automatically transfer funds, and we will transfer by paypal for all tickets bought through www.mindonfire.co.uk We can only apologize, thanks for your understanding...
MIND ON FIRE COLLECTIVE x
Synkro is known for his tight, bass heavy, garage influenced productions but the track featured here Winter

And last, but certainly not least is a show which has had everyone here at Mind On Fire pretty much foaming at the mouth. MINDSET SHOWCASE @ THE RAM AND SHACKLE Friday 23rd January 09
MindonFire.co.uk website launch//
INDIGO // SYNKRO // BIOME // XXXY // MELATONIN
Mindset sets to push the spectrum of sound. With varying echoes and volumes creating soundscapes, colours and sculptures. Drawing attention to the shape and depth of the space between sounds as well as to the sounds themselves. With a foundation of deep and throbbing sub-bass and crafted by each producer with a distinctly organic characteristic. Mindset will be ever evolving and growing and taking new directions flowing through dub, techno, ambient, electronica and through new horizons

early Feb 12'' Release. Digital to follow
MINDSET 002 12" Narcossist/Logos 12" Out Now
Available from Boomkat, chemical,Juno,Redeye,BM and all other shops that sell decent vinyl Boomkat review: This is the first release from underground dubstep figure Narcossist, a name you may recognise if you've been checking Dusk & Blackdown's excellent Rinse FM show or checked any of Grievous Angel's on-point mixes available elsewhere on the net. Narcossist has been lauded for his finely produced rhythms which incorporate the kinky slink patterns of early Zed Bias, El-B or more recently Burial, with a love of Maurizio's M-Series or the Burial mixes and fresh deep techno from T++ and Dettmann for a blend that positions him in a neat spot of his own. 'Sunblind' is a Narcossist classic already, having done the rounds on myspace for some time, it was a logical progression to a vinyl pressing for this crafty blend of auld garage riffs, echo chamber FX and a properly tight 4/4 flex that deserves a spot in every future stepper's box. 'Slow' on the flip displays another side to his programming skills, with constantly shifting 2-step patterns executed to perfection with a warehouse spooked sound design. His remix of Logo's 'Frontier Dub' again switches styles to an irresistable deep and dubby house bump, done Berlin style with sprightly chords and a kinked Detroit flow that show this man is defintiely one to watch.
MINDSET 001 Indigo Out Now // A.Set to Cycle. B.Let it Rain
Now available from Boomkat, Redeye, Juno and independant record stores. Mindset001 digital is now available from digital-tunes.net and addictech.com
Mindset 001: Melancholy dub tech variants from Indigo and Mindset Recordings with a debut release directed towards the fertile middle ground between dubstep, techno and related rhythm science. A-side 'Set To Cycle' strikes at a striding 140bpm dub techno pace with offset snares, and sombre dub chords lending a deeper blue atmosphere to a promising track largely influenced by Peverelist, F, or Mala. 'Let It Rain' on the flip is an altogether smarter cut, this time taking it's influences from something a little more complex and electronica debted, with a dipping swing set somewhere between T++ and Toasty. Well set.
