“Crazed in its magnificence, ...a funk apocalypse.”
Doug Weir, Solid Earth
"Archaic funk fables and dub migrations. Bittersweet songs of the self, soul and society played by a ten-piece heavy groove orchestra, conducted and improvised on the night."
Fronted by Damien Mahoney (Defunkles, Currymints, Fooligan) and Julie E Gordon (Happy Mondays, RSL, Mark Rae, Grand Central), Caulbearers' music is rooted in rhythm - a belief in the power of dance and communal song, rhymes and repetitions.
Caulbearers' performances are inflammatory, full of energy yet touched with melancholy, inspired by the possibilities of mass assembly, whether for celebration or potent political expression.
Caulbearers are a central part of Single Cell, a Manchester-based DIY music collective born out of political activism and a love of musical collaboration. Single Cell Collective's debut compilation album, 'Six Rivers' seeks to reveal the unseen people and issues in a city of stark contrasts and inequality.
"...an intriguing and muscular album" Chris Long, BBC Introducing
