Now Then Mind On Fire
The third of our trio of summer shows sees Now Then Manchester team up with the ever-innovative Mind On Fire independent music promoters for an evening of hip hop, electronica and whatever else DANNY DRIVE THRU, DAYSE & AVER (The Natural Curriculum) and VIEKA feel like channelling between your ears.
DANNY DRIVE THRU
Primed to be the first 7” vinyl single release on Mind On Fire Recordings after the label’s string of visionary compilations promoting the best of local innovators, Danny Drive Thru’s ‘Psychedelia Smith’ / ‘Violence Makes’ split is a tangible embodiment of years spent soaking up the contents of a vast sphere of influences towards fine-tuning his mixing skills. The funky hip hop and soul scratch DJ adds his beats to an eclectic array of samples and clips from retro blues to Street Fighter.
DAYSE & AVER / TNC
Local hip hop and street art connoisseurs The Natural Curriculum have brought many things to the city of Manchester: sharp, astute lyrics, smooth production and a canny knack for an inventive music video (see below). In their ranks are producer/MC combo Dayse and Aver, a pair who describe this side project (so far a free digital EP – below) as a splinter group from the main TNC branch. But don’t mistake that to mean they’ll only be a fraction of the quality; Dayse & Aver will more than lift the roof off.
Chantelle Scott’s synthetic compositions may owe much to the early 90s wave of Bristolian trip hop, but a vocal similarity with Beth Gibbons shouldn’t detract from the vivid soundscapes concocted when her harmonious sampling orchestra meets percussionist Joe Luckin’s unwavering rhythms.
ZOIR and MIND ON FIRE DJs will be resident tune selectors during set changeovers.
Free entry (pay what you like; £3 suggested / much appreciated to support performers and ensure the future unearthing of similar gems).
Dulcimer is a stone’s throw away from the new Chorlton tram stop. Other transport links are also available…
[September’s show will be 4th Thursday of the month (22nd) and the full line-up is in the TBC column. But keep your eyes peeled.]
